Pharmacogenetics is the testing of genetic differences that affect how a patient metabolizes drugs.  Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are variations in a genetic sequence.  SNPs have been identified that alter the activity of the enzymes responsible for drug metabolism.  When prescribing new drugs, clinicians are responsible for determining the correct dosage for each patient.  Pharmacogenetics allows clinicians to make better informed decisions and tailor treatment to each individual patient.  The Verigene System’s ability to detect several polymorphisms using a single, automated test enables pharmacogenetic testing to be conducted with minimal labor, in any size hospital.
